Genre Research

The genre that I am interested in filming is the teen comedy genre. The teen comedy genre is a light-hearted drama centered around individuals between the stages of childhood and adulthood, which typically features a coming of age theme. These types of films are targeted towards teens, young adults, aspirers, and people that can relate to the characters and the situations they go through within the film. Some codes and conventions of this theme includes high school social groups, working, drugs, alcohol, bullying, stereotypes, teen issues such as peer pressure, bullying, being outcasted, and not liking life.
Some production techniques that are used in comedies are the use of long shots, the Gilligan cut, reaction shots, freeze frame, slow motion, non-diegetic sound, as well as the use of a pan, dolly, or cut to reveal something funny. Voice overs are also used to reveal information to the audience, as well as using the inner voice to hear the character’s internal thoughts, and make the film funnier. These films typically have bright, natural lighting to maintain an upbeat, realistic mood. Two movies that fit into this genre are:

Accepted
This film fits into the teen comedy genre because it is about a highschooler who gets rejected by every school he applied to, so he decides to create his own. It has the typical teen comedy conventions, dealing with a relatable situation with added humor. Slow motion, freeze frame, natural lighting, voice overs, sound effects, and the typical pop background music are all used to bring this comedy to life.

The Duff

The Duff is a typical highschool teen comedy movie. It has the school cliques, the cliches, the nerds versus jocks, popular versus the unpopular, and includes all of the high school stereotypes. This movie is about a high school senior that has been labeled as the Designated Ugly Fat Friend in her friend group, and is on a mission to upgrade herself.
